Hospital
Radio
Since
1979 I have been involved with programme production and
presentation on hospital radio. I started at Radio 214,
serving the Kent and Canterbury hospitals and worked on
various request programmes, usually on Sunday evenings.
I worked mainly with Doug Wood (the then programme controller)
and routinely managed to mess up his programmes before I
went on air. (Usually by talking when the mic was on, or
jumping his records).
I
joined Hospital Radio
Wey in September 1980 (based in Weybridge, Surrey) and
hosted the Monday evening request show between 8 and 10
pm for 8 years, with a short 6 month stint hosting the pop
and rock news programme 'Newsdisc' (after taking over from
old-hand Roy Crockford). During the time I was active with
the station we made the transition from a very small ('broom-cupboard')
studio in Weybridge cottage hospital to a multi-studio portacabin
at St. Peter's Hospital, near Chertsey.

I
co-hosted the Monday evening request show for several years
with Ray Rainbow (his real name!) and spent many a happy
evening playing requests from St. Peter's maternity and
taking phone calls from patients. The programme consisted
of a mainly un-planned 2 hours which could consist of arguments
between the two presenters over which records to play!
Radio
Wey has been the breeding ground for such talent as Mike
Read and Russell Pocket, as well as many others!
In
1982 I also joined up with
Radio Wexham (based in Slough, Berkshire) where I presented
various programmes during the evening. I became programme
controller in 1983 and spent several years working with
Jon Dean and other talented presenters, including Toby
Anstis. Also a member of the radio Wexham line up was
Nigel
Williams.
