Review from Rolling Stone, November 4th 1976:
Dan Hartman, who wrote Edgar Winter's hit "Free Ride", could give Eric Carmen a run for his money in the singles market, since almost everything on his debut album is reminiscent of one or more proven commercial formulas. A multi-instrumentalist, Hartman shows a knack not just for writing hooks, but for arranging, playing and producing them in a wide variety of AM radio styles. If his solo vocal tracks reveal a Burton Cummings sound alike, his multiple vocals skillfully imitate Orleans ("Hear My Song"). Wings ("High Sign" On The Telephone"), Chicago ("Lighthouse"), the Four Tops ("Cant Stand In The Way Of Love") and Hall and oats ("If Only I Were Stronger"). But where Carmen's eclecticism charms with aggressive opulence, Hartman's less pushy imitations align more candidly with rock's "bubblegum" tradition. The difference may be crucial to Hartman, since today's commercial rock scene is a horse race which demands that every new cat, in order even to place, must fight to outdo the competition, not merely keep up with it.
